Mother’s Day weekend is one of the better weekends of the spring in Pickaway County. The weather is usually good, things are blooming, and there’s enough going on that you can build a whole day — or two — without leaving the county.

Here’s a roundup of ideas, from picking your own bouquet to spending a morning outside together.

Pick Her a Bouquet at Blossoms at the Bend

This one is the gem. Blossoms at the Bend is a u-pick flower farm on Williamsport Pike run by two sisters who have been growing flowers on the property since 2011. The fields are chemical-free, the operation runs on the honor system, and a bouquet costs $3.

You show up, grab the scissors they leave out, walk the rows, and cut what you like. Peonies, snapdragons, delphiniums, zinnias — what’s blooming depends on the season, but spring is one of the best times to go. The sisters have said they especially love it when mothers bring kids out to pick their own bouquets. It shows.

Even if nobody’s home, you’re welcome to walk the fields and leave your payment in the lock box. It’s that kind of place.

Take a Wildflower Walk Together

The Pickaway County Park District hosts guided wildflower walks through local preserves in the spring — a naturalist-led stroll through the blooms with no agenda other than getting outside and paying attention to what’s around you. It’s free, it’s family-friendly, and it’s the kind of thing people mean when they say they want to do something different this year.

Programs vary by season, so check the current schedule at pickaway.com/event-calendar and look for Park District programs. Some sessions also include a bouquet-making activity where you get to take something home — which makes it an easy Mother’s Day win.

Make Something Together at Inspiration Station

Inspiration Station at 1170 N. Court St. in Circleville is a hands-on STEAM museum that’s genuinely fun for all ages — not just kids. Around Mother’s Day, they sometimes host special family activities including things like light-up card making, flower planting, and other creative projects designed for families to do together.

Stop at a Local Greenhouse

If she’d rather have something to plant than something to cut, two local greenhouses are worth knowing about.

Scioto Blooms Greenhouse in Ashville grows hundreds of varieties of flowering annuals and vegetable plants — bought direct from the grower, at fair prices. It’s a good spot if you want to come home with something that’ll keep blooming all summer.

Rhoads Garden Center in Circleville has been part of the community since 1958. What started as a roadside farm stand is now a full garden center with fresh plants, seasonal produce, local beer and wine, and events. The spring plant selection is strong, the staff knows their stuff, and it’s easy to spend more time there than you planned.

Local flower vendors show up at farmers markets throughout the county during the spring and summer — a nice bonus when you’re already out shopping local. Markets run in Circleville, Ashville, Commercial Point, and South Bloomfield through the season.
