Take the Scenic Route: Fall in Pickaway County

Fall is a good time to slow down, take the back roads and spend a day exploring Pickaway County.

As the season changes, country roads wind past colorful trees and open farmland, farm markets fill with pumpkins and seasonal favorites, and cooler days make it a great time to get outside. Add a few local shops and restaurants, and there are plenty of reasons to spend a fall day exploring.

Start with Something Local

A crisp fall morning and a local coffee are a pretty good match. Stop at Pick’em Up Joe Coffee Co. in Commercial Point or River’s Coffee House in Ashville, then spend a little time exploring nearby before heading out onto the country roads.

Fall is one of the best times to leave a little extra room in the day for an unplanned stop.

Take the Scenic Route

Head north through Ashville and Commercial Point, west toward Deer Creek, or choose a few back roads and enjoy the drive. Outside of town, the landscape opens into farmland, tree-lined roads and small communities, with plenty to see as the leaves begin to change.

For more time outdoors, head to Deer Creek State Park or A.W. Marion State Park near Circleville. Walk a trail, spend some time along the water or find a spot to enjoy the fall color.

Parks and trails throughout Pickaway County offer even more places to get outside while the weather is cool.

Make a Farm Market Stop

Fall and farm markets just go together.

Look for pumpkins, mums, apples, fresh produce, baked goods and locally made favorites at stops including Parrett’s, Mast Farm Market, Kirk’s Farm Market, Rhoads Garden Center and Fannin’s Farm Market & Deli.

These are just a few of the farm markets, growers and seasonal stands around Pickaway County. Keep an eye out as you travel the back roads. You may find another stop to add to the day.

Heading west? Lohstroh Family Farms sits just across the county line in neighboring Madison County and is another longtime fall destination in the area.

Farm market hours and offerings change with the season, so check with individual locations before visiting.

Make Lunch a Local Stop

All that exploring calls for something good to eat. Stop at Cherry Street Diner in Ashville, grab a pizza at Saltcreek Slice in Tarlton, or see what other locally owned restaurants you find during your drive.

Save room for something sweet. Crosstown Creamery in Tarlton is a stop for ice cream and desserts, while Country Cakes & Bakes in New Holland has plenty of bakery favorites to take home for later.

Make Time for a Little Shopping

Spend some time exploring downtown Circleville, where locally owned shops line the streets around the historic downtown. Browse for clothing, gifts, home décor and other finds, then take a walk around town before heading to your next stop.

Fall is also a good time to check out local shops in communities throughout Pickaway County.

Sip Something Local

Manchester Hill Winery produces wine and hard cider in the Circleville area, while M&O Spirits in Ashville offers locally crafted spirits. Tours of M&O Spirits can also be scheduled for a closer look at the distillery.

Stop in for a drink, plan a tour or make one of these local stops part of your fall drive.

Make Fall Your Own

Coffee in Commercial Point or Ashville. A drive through the countryside. Pumpkins from a farm market. A walk at Deer Creek or A.W. Marion. Lunch somewhere local. A little downtown shopping. Maybe a glass of wine or something sweet before heading home.

You don’t have to fit it all into one day. There will be another country road to take, another local place to try and another reason to come back.

The Circleville Pumpkin Show brings thousands of visitors to downtown Circleville each October, and the Pickaway County Visitors Bureau has a new resource to help visitors plan their time in Pickaway County.

The new Pumpkin Show Companion brings together helpful information for visitors before and during the 2026 Circleville Pumpkin Show, taking place October 21–24.

The companion is designed to complement the official Circleville Pumpkin Show website. While PumpkinShow.com remains the source for the official schedule, contests, parades and Show information, the Pickaway.com companion focuses on additional resources visitors may need while planning their trip and exploring the community.

Visitors can find information about events happening during Pumpkin Show week, accessibility and mobility scooter rentals, shuttle options, lodging, the Discover Pickaway app and more. The page also helps connect visitors with things to see and do throughout Pickaway County before, during and after their time at the Show.

2026 Circleville Pumpkin Show Merchandise Arrives August 25

Pumpkin Show season is getting closer, and you don’t have to wait until October to bring home a piece of one of Circleville’s favorite traditions.

Beginning August 25, official 2026 Circleville Pumpkin Show merchandise will be available to shop in person at Circleville Apothecary, Ashville Apothecary and the Pickaway County Welcome Center.

This year’s merchandise includes official Pumpkin Show clothing and the 2026 commemorative pin, giving longtime collectors, local residents and visitors an early opportunity to celebrate the 119th Circleville Pumpkin Show.

A Special Pin for a Historic Year

The 2026 commemorative pin has an especially local story behind it. Circleville native Ava Neff created this year’s design, which was selected through a communitywide design contest.

Neff grew up attending the Pumpkin Show, helping at her mother’s Rhoads noodle booth and entering her photography in the Pumpkin Show Art Show. She served as Miss Pumpkin Show First Attendant in 2021 and remains connected to the tradition today through Ava Lauren Photography, photographing Little Miss Pumpkin Show contestants each year.

“Having my design selected for this year’s commemorative Pumpkin Show pin is truly a full-circle moment,” Neff said. “To now have the opportunity to create something that will become part of Pumpkin Show history is an honor I don’t take lightly.”

Her design also captures what makes 2026 unique. The pin incorporates the American flag, fireworks and the America 250 logo, recognizing the nation’s 250th anniversary while keeping the Circleville Pumpkin Show at the heart of the design.

“Blending America’s 250th anniversary with the traditions of the Circleville Pumpkin Show felt like a natural fit because both celebrate history, community, and pride,” Neff said.

Shop Pumpkin Show Before Pumpkin Show

For visitors who love planning ahead, the August 25 merchandise launch is a chance to shop Pumpkin Show before the streets of downtown Circleville fill for the annual celebration.

Official merchandise, including 2026 clothing and commemorative pins, will be available in person at three Pickaway County locations:

  • Circleville Apothecary in downtown Circleville
  • Ashville Apothecary in Ashville
  • Pickaway County Welcome Center in Circleville

Stopping in to shop is also an easy way to make Pumpkin Show part of a day exploring Pickaway County. While you’re here, grab a visitor guide, discover local shops and restaurants, and start planning what you want to see when you return in October.

The 119th Circleville Pumpkin Show will take place October 21–24, 2026, in downtown Circleville, with special America 250 opening activities beginning Tuesday, October 20. Admission is free.

Cooler temperatures, changing leaves and a full calendar of outdoor activities make fall a great time to explore Pickaway County. From guided walks and nature programs to creative workshops and seasonal family fun, the Pickaway County Park District has something planned for nearly every interest this September, October and November.

Whether you want to discover a new trail, learn a new skill or spend an evening under the stars, these programs offer plenty of reasons to get outside this fall.

September Programs

Fall begins with opportunities to get moving, get creative and prepare for the outdoor season.

  • September 2 at 9:30 a.m.: Walk-A-Long Wednesdays at Canal Park
  • September 8 at 6 p.m.: Wild Threads Fall Quilting Workshop at Park District Headquarters
  • September 12 at 9:30 a.m.: Hunter Safety at Park District Headquarters
  • September 16 at 9:30 a.m.: Walk-A-Long Wednesdays at Roundtown Trail
  • September 22 at 6 p.m.: Wild Threads Fall Quilting Workshop at Park District Headquarters

The quilting workshops require registration and cost $35 per participant.

October Programs

October brings nighttime nature programs, wellness activities, workshops and Halloween fun.

Learn more about some of the animals that become active after sunset during Parks After Dark: The Truth About Bats on October 3. One week later, visitors can look toward the night sky during Astronomy Night at Canal Park.

The Wild Threads Sewing Workshop requires registration and costs $35 per participant.

November Programs

The fall schedule continues into November with guided walks, hands-on workshops and programs focused on wellness and safety.

Celebrate National Take a Hike Day on November 17 with a special outing along the Roundtown Trail. Participants will meet on the YMCA side of the trail at 1:30 p.m.

Registration is required for the Fire Cider workshop, which costs $35, and the Stained Glass Workshop, which costs $120.

Immersion Festival 2026 Brings 60+ Artists to Circleville, Ohio

More than 60 bands and artists will take the stage in Circleville this September when Immersion Festival returns to the Pickaway Agricultural Center.

Presented by Mission Youth, Immersion takes place September 4–5, 2026, bringing two days of live music to Pickaway County. Admission is free, and the festival will also feature food trucks and vendors.

If you’re looking for live music in Central Ohio over Labor Day weekend, Immersion offers plenty to hear and see in one stop.

More Than 60 Bands and Artists

Immersion packs a lot of music into two days, with performances scheduled across multiple stages throughout the festival.

The lineup includes rock and heavier music along with acoustic and other performances, giving festivalgoers plenty of options throughout the day. Friday also includes a block party lineup.

With so many artists scheduled, visitors can come for a favorite band or spend the day discovering someone new.

Whether you’re looking for a peaceful morning walk, a family outing, or a chance to experience somewhere new, the Passport to the Trails makes it easy to turn an ordinary day into an outdoor adventure.

Six Stops, Countless Ways to Explore

Each passport location offers something a little different. Wander through the scenic landscape of Metzger Preserve near Williamsport, enjoy a stroll along the Roundtown Trail, discover local history at the South End Canal, or spend an afternoon at Canal Park, where families can enjoy one of the area’s most popular playgrounds. The Passport to the Trails also introduces visitors to everything the Pickaway County Park District offers beyond its beautiful green spaces.

Published by the Pickaway County Visitors Bureau, the guide serves as a year-round resource for discovering attractions, restaurants, events, parks, trails, lodging, and local experiences throughout the county. Inside, readers will find inspiration for future trips, new places to explore, and familiar favorites that continue to shape the character of Pickaway County.

The guide highlights destinations across the county, including the Pickaway County Park District’s growing network of parks, trails, and preserves, Deer Creek State Park, Uptown Circleville, local museums, wineries, restaurants, shops, and community gathering places. Readers can also learn more about the Pickaway Agriculture & Event Center, which hosts a variety of events throughout the year and continues to serve as a hub for agriculture, entertainment, and community activities.

Annual traditions remain an important part of the Pickaway County story, and the guide features many of the events that bring residents and visitors together each year. Tourism continues to play an important role in the local economy. According to Tourism Economics, visitor spending generated a total economic impact of $209.7 million in Pickaway County during 2023, supporting 1,552 jobs and generating $26.3 million in tax revenue. Those visitor dollars support local restaurants, retailers, lodging providers, attractions, event venues, and many other businesses throughout the county.

Tarlton America 250 Celebration Planned for July 11

The Village of Tarlton will celebrate America’s 250th anniversary on Saturday, July 11, with a day of live music, family activities, local vendors, a tractor parade, and community fellowship during the Tarlton America 250 Celebration.

The event is part of America 250-Ohio’s Ohio’s Homecoming & Picnic Signature Program, a statewide initiative encouraging communities to gather throughout 2026 to celebrate the people, places, and stories that have shaped Ohio and the nation over the past 250 years.

Located in northeastern Pickaway County, Tarlton has a long history of bringing people together. Founded by Benjamin Newell in 1801, the village remains one of the county’s oldest settlements and provides a fitting backdrop for a celebration focused on community, heritage, and hometown pride.

Activities begin at noon with vendors and children’s activities. Visitors can spend the afternoon exploring booths, visiting with neighbors, and enjoying the relaxed atmosphere of one of Pickaway County’s historic communities.

A highlight of the day will be the Tractor Show and Parade at 2 p.m., showcasing a tradition that reflects the agricultural roots of the area. The parade offers an opportunity to celebrate the equipment, families, and farming heritage that have helped shape the region for generations.

Live music will follow from 4 p.m. to 10 p.m., providing entertainment throughout the evening. Food vendors and community activities will be available throughout the day, and an auction featuring vintage Tarlton signs and memorabilia will offer a unique look at the village’s past.

America 250 commemorates the 250th anniversary of the signing of the Declaration of Independence in 1776. Across Ohio, communities are participating in events that highlight local history while creating opportunities for people to gather and celebrate together. The Tarlton America 250 Celebration brings that mission to life through a day centered on community connections and shared experiences.

The Pickaway County Fair Returns June 20-27

The Pickaway County Fair returns June 20-27, bringing eight days of agriculture, entertainment, food, competition, and family fun to the Pickaway County Agriculture & Event Center. From grandstand events and midway rides to 4-H exhibits and livestock shows, fair week remains one of Pickaway County’s favorite summer traditions.

For generations, the fair has brought together families, friends, exhibitors, volunteers, and visitors from across the region. It’s a place where agriculture meets entertainment, where months of hard work are showcased in the show ring and exhibit halls, and where memories are made year after year.

Set on the grounds of the Pickaway County Agriculture & Event Center, the fair also highlights one of the county’s most important event venues. Throughout the year, the facility hosts community events, regional and national competitions, music festivals, trade shows, agricultural programs, and gatherings that bring visitors to Pickaway County from across Ohio and beyond.

Don’t Miss These Grandstand Favorites

One of the biggest draws of fair week is the grandstand entertainment lineup.

The week begins with Harness Racing on Saturday and Sunday, followed by the crowd-favorite Roundtown Wiener Dog Derby on Sunday afternoon.

Monday night brings the excitement of the Rough E Rodeo. Motorsports fans can look forward to Motocross on Tuesday, Motor Mayhem on Wednesday, and Autocross on Thursday.

The week wraps up with Truck & Tractor Pulls on Friday and the always-popular Demolition Derby on Saturday evening.

No matter which event is your favorite, the grandstand offers something exciting nearly every night of the fair.
