Fall in Ohio is all about slowing down — the crunch of leaves underfoot, a mug of something warm in hand, and the simple joy of seeing the countryside glow in shades of red, orange, and gold.

According to the Ohio Department of Natural Resources (ODNR), autumn color is still shining across the state. Even as the season moves toward November, Ohio’s parks, forests, and trails are showing their most vibrant displays of the year. It’s the perfect time to plan one more weekend drive, a hike close to home, or a day trip that reminds you why Ohio truly is the Heart of It All.

Here in Pickaway County, you don’t have to go far to enjoy the season. From peaceful trails to lakeside views, our parks offer some of the best ways to experience autumn in full color. A few local favorites include:

Canal Park – Stroll along the old canal path and watch the Scioto River reflect shades of gold and amber. This quiet spot is perfect for an afternoon walk or picnic.

A.W. Marion State Park – Just east of Circleville, this scenic park features wooded trails around Hargus Lake — ideal for leaf peeping, fishing, or simply enjoying a crisp fall day.

Deer Creek State Park – Rolling hills and lake views make this a picture-perfect destination for a scenic drive, hike, or cozy overnight stay at the lodge.

As the United States prepares to celebrate 250 years of independence in 2026, two of Pickaway County’s most scenic destinations — A.W. Marion State Park and Deer Creek State Park — will take part in the statewide America 250-Ohio celebration.

The Ohio Department of Natural Resources (ODNR) recently announced more than 50 special events planned across the state in 2026, honoring the history, beauty, and community spirit that define Ohio. Among them are two can’t-miss experiences happening right here at home:

Soak up summer fun with live entertainment, outdoor recreation, and community pride along the beautiful shores of Deer Creek State Park.

These events are part of a year-long statewide initiative to commemorate the 250th anniversary of the signing of the Declaration of Independence, bringing people together through shared stories, outdoor adventures, and Ohio hospitality.

At the Pickaway County Visitors Bureau, we’re proud to help share these experiences and support the partners who make them possible. Events like these highlight why tourism matters — connecting people to our parks, strengthening local businesses, and inspiring new visitors to discover what makes Pickaway County such a special place to explore.

In 2023, visitor spending in Pickaway County generated $209.7 million in total economic impact and supported 1,552 local jobs, according to a Tourism Economics report for TourismOhio. Every visit helps our communities grow and thrive.

Ohio Women’s Outdoor Adventure Weekend

Join other women ages 16 and up for a fun, beginner-friendly weekend of outdoor exploration at Deer Creek State Park. Run by the Ohio Department of Natural Resources, this three-day getaway includes two nights’ lodging in the newly renovated lodge, five delicious meals, snacks, a commemorative t-shirt, instruction, gear, transportation between activities, and all program materials.

Choose from beginner sessions in paddling, fishing, archery, hiking, gun basics & range shooting, nature art, wildlife exploration, and more—each taught by experienced instructors in a relaxed, supportive setting. Whether you’ve never held a fishing rod or you’re curious about archery, you’ll learn new skills, meet friends, and discover the outdoor fun available right here in Ohio.
