False Promises: The Struggle for Black Voting Rights in Ohio

The Pickaway County District Library hosts a discussion of “False Promises: The Struggle for Black Voting Rights in Ohio” on Tuesday, September 8, at 11 a.m. in the Koch Meeting Room.

Presented by Dr. Ric Sheffield, the program explores the collection of stories of courage and resolve as Black men tried to exercise their rights as citizens in late-1800s Ohio, a state often thought to be less antagonistic to racial equality in the Reconstruction era. Their accounts reveal how contemporary voter-suppression tactics have roots in Ohio’s history of resistance to universal suffrage.

The event is free and open to adults age 19 and older. For accessibility accommodations, contact the Pickaway County District Library at 740-477-1644.
