What’s Happening at Deer Creek State Park This April
Spring is a great time to get outside at Deer Creek State Park, and the park’s naturalist has put together a full lineup of free and low-cost programs for April. Whether you’re looking for a hands-on family activity, a guided hike, or just a reason to spend an afternoon outdoors, here’s what’s happening this month.
Beginners’ Fishing — Saturday, April 4 | 9:00–10:00AM
Never cast a line before? No problem. Join Naturalist Rylee Santini at the Deer Creek State Park Office pond for an introduction to fishing and the aquatic life found here at Deer Creek. Bring your own gear and bait if you have it — some supplies will be available. Note that anyone 16 and older will need a valid Ohio fishing license to fish.
The Nature Center will also be open that day from noon to 4:00PM — a great add-on if you’re already out at the park.
Easter Campout Activities — Saturday, April 11 | 11:00AM–3:00PM
Spending Easter weekend at Deer Creek? The Friends Group will be on-site with crafts, games, and raffles, and the food booth will be open. Egg hunts are planned for kids in grade 5 and under — watch the Deer Creek State Park Facebook page for the age group schedule as it gets closer.
Get Ready for Earth Day — Friday, April 17 | 5:00–6:00PM
Head to the Deer Creek Lodge & Conference Center Lobby for a quick, informative program about Earth Day — its history, what it means, and practical ways to support conservation locally. Naturalist Rylee will have an information table set up with resources on local conservation opportunities and sustainable changes you can make at home.
Beginners’ Archery — Sunday, April 19 | 12:00–1:30PM
Always wanted to try archery? All equipment and instruction will be provided. This one is fun for all ages — just make sure everyone is wearing enclosed shoes, and plan to arrive at noon for the required safety brief. Sign up ahead of time by emailing Naturalist Rylee at rylee.santini@dnr.ohio.gov or using the QR code on the park’s program schedule. Meet at the Nature Center.
Hawkview Meadow Hike — Sunday, April 19 | 2:00–3:00PM
Right after archery, lace up your boots for a guided hike along the Hawkview Meadow Trail — a 3/4-mile loop that winds past Clarks Run creek through wooded and meadow areas. There are some hills, so wear appropriate footwear. Bring water and a snack. Park in the campground lot and meet the naturalist at the Nature Center.
Nature Center Hours — April
April 4: 12:00–4:00PM
April 18: 2:00–4:00PM
Hours are subject to change — check the Deer Creek State Park Facebook page for the latest.
All programs are free and open to the public unless otherwise noted. Children must be accompanied by an adult. Programs are subject to change, so follow Deer Creek State Park on Facebook for updates or contact Naturalist Rylee Santini at rylee.santini@dnr.ohio.gov.
