Stages Pond State Nature Park
Stage’s Pond State Nature Preserve, dedicated on August 23, 1974, stands as a natural monument to the great ice fields that once covered much of Ohio 17,000 years ago. Today, approximately 30 acres of this 64-acre depression are submerged in water, with marshy low areas located in the central and southern parts of the preserve. These wetlands, alongside the surrounding fields and woodlands, create a rich mosaic of habitats that support a diverse array of species.
During the spring and fall, Stage’s Pond serves as a crucial stopover for migrating waterfowl, providing a place to rest and feed. In summer, the area is home to a nesting colony of great blue herons and numerous shorebird species. The oak-hickory uplands and open fields host songbirds, quail, pheasant, and several hawk species. Botanically, the preserve is equally diverse, with aquatic, field, woodland, and marsh plants thriving from April to late October, though spring offers the most vibrant display of colorful native wildflowers.
The preserve is open from 1/2 hour before sunrise to 1/2 hour after sunset. Visitors are encouraged to stay on designated trails and should note that there are no public restrooms available and pets are not permitted. The preserve features 3.5 miles of trails, including the Boundary, Waterfowl, and White Oak trails, all of which are accessible for visitors to explore the varied landscapes.
