Pickaway County sits right in the heart of Ohio, about 25 to 30 minutes south of Columbus on US-23. You’re also an easy drive from Chillicothe and the Hocking Hills region, making it a great base for exploring central and southern Ohio.
About Pickaway County
Pickaway County is located in central Ohio, covering 501 square miles about 25 to 30 minutes south of Columbus on US-23. Circleville is the county seat and largest city, with a population of 13,927.

Economic development is led by Pickaway Progress Partnership.
History of Pickaway County
Pickaway County was established in 1810 and sits at the crossroads of Ohio’s natural and cultural history. The region has been shaped by people for thousands of years, and that history is still visible across the landscape today.
Ancient Earthworks and Mound Builders
Long before European settlement, the Hopewell and Adena cultures built ceremonial mounds and earthworks throughout what is now Pickaway County. Circleville itself was founded on the site of a remarkable circular earthworks complex, giving the city its name. Five of the county’s surviving mounds are listed on the National Register of Historic Places, and a total of 32 county sites are nationally recognized.
Visitors can explore the Mounds of Pickaway County driving tour, distributed by the Pickaway County Historical Society.

Early Settlement and Frontier History
Pickaway County played a significant role in Ohio’s early settlement era and the frontier period that defined the region. Logan Elm State Memorial marks the site where Shawnee chief Logan delivered one of the most famous speeches in American frontier history.
Agricultural Heritage
Deep agricultural roots continue to define Pickaway County today. The Circleville Pumpkin Show, one of the oldest and largest free festivals in Ohio, grew directly out of that farming heritage and has been drawing visitors since 1903.

Why Tourism Matters in Pickaway County
It’s Bigger Than the Pumpkin Show
The Circleville Pumpkin Show is world famous and we’re proud of it. But visitors come to Pickaway County all year long. Spring brings hikers and outdoor enthusiasts. Summer fills up Deer Creek and A.W. Marion. Fall means foliage, harvest festivals, wineries, and yes, the Pumpkin Show. Winter has its own calendar of events and reasons to visit.
Pickaway County is also a destination for weddings, reunions, corporate events, and large gatherings. The Pickaway Agricultural and Event Center is a premier venue drawing visitors from across the region for events, rodeos, livestock shows, live music, trade shows, and more.
Every season, every event, every concert, every wedding weekend, visitors are spending money at local businesses across Pickaway County.
How Visitor Spending Works
When someone travels to Pickaway County they fill their gas tank, grab a meal, pick up something at a local shop, and maybe book a room. That spending ripples across the whole county, supporting local jobs and businesses whether you consider yourself a tourism business or not. In communities large and small, from Circleville to Ashville to Williamsport, visitors contribute to the local economy every time they stop.
How PCVB Is Funded
The Pickaway County Visitors Bureau is funded entirely by lodging tax, a fee collected when someone pays to stay overnight in the county. No resident tax dollars. No general fund money. The more visitors we attract across the county, the more lodging tax is generated, and the more resources PCVB has to keep marketing Pickaway County and bringing people in.
You Are Part of This
Tourism works best when the whole community is in on it, and that means every business, every staff member, and every resident who interacts with a visitor. No matter where you are in Pickaway County, you have a role in the experience visitors take home with them. That’s exactly what this hub is here to support.
